Painting Lilacs at Glensheen Mansion

I was recently invited to paint Lilacs at Glensheen Mansion for Lilac Lovefest in Duluth MN. I arrived at Glensheen a little before 9 am with coffee go-cup and a loaded backpack. I was the first artist to arrive so I took the time to explore the formal gardens and woodland trails searching for lilacs.

The best lilac shrubs were clustered around a sunlit brick building. That’s where I settled in. The others soon found their way to the same area. I was able to meet some of the artists I follow, or have seen on Facebook. Setting up close gave us a chance to chat occasionally and sneak peeks at each other’s work.

There were three pastel painters, two watercolor painters and myself with oils. It became windy and even a bit chilly but the sunshine was beautiful. Plain air is still challenging for me as I struggle to paint fast and keep it loose. However it’s more about being outdoors while doing what you love! And I indeed had a wonderful day.

Our paintings will go on display this week in Fitger’s Hotel Lobby until July 5th, 2020. If you are in the area please stop by.
